Jake would look up in to the night sky, searching for the stars, yet the endeavor would be in vain. The path to the stars was lost, much like his own journey to find a purpose. The search for the stars was obscured by light whereas the path to the future remained mired in darkness. The heat from the city would mix with the cool, light rain, creating a fog within the city. The lights screaming from the fronts of cars would hit this fog and would almost appear to be trapped within it, creating an eerie glow throughout most of the city. A cacophony of sounds would fill Jake’s ears as he aimlessly walked on, idly twirling an unlit cigarette between his fingers. As he continued on Jake would become more and more frustrated, eventually crumbling the already wet cigarette between his fingers as he pushed an old door inwards, wiping the tobacco on his pants. “This is bullshit” he would say under his breath as the smell of alcohol and tobacco hit him. Jake would then hear the sounds of gruff men laughing and cheap whores talking. He would sit down the bar and an old man would greet him. “The usual” Jake would say and the white haired man would pour him a shot of bourbon. In his peripheral Jake would notice a girl; this girl was obviously pretty young, around fifteen if Jake had to guess. It was apparent that this people didn’t really care the age of those that entered, but then again this girl might have been an exception simply because she was a girl. Jake would roll his eyes, take a swig of the warm liquor, and set the glass down with a definite thud. He had thought about doing something about it, but thought better of it, realizing that he’d probably do more harm than good. Sighing Jake would sit back down and would motion for another round as he shook his head in moderate disgust, letting the pity party begin as the alcohol did its thing.
